How It Works
1. CBC Is the Default First Year
Every UBA undergraduate career begins with the Ciclo Básico Común (CBC) — a 6-subject first year split as 2 common (Introducción al Pensamiento Científico and Introducción al Conocimiento de la Sociedad y el Estado), 2 oriented (broad-area block) and 2 career-specific. Lectures are delivered presencially at sedes across CABA and Greater Buenos Aires. Formal inscription requires a legalised secundario completo via TAD.
2. UBA XXI Is the Distance Alternative
The Programa UBA XXI delivers CBC content at distance with virtual cursada and presential exams at 33 subsedes across Argentina (Buenos Aires province, Entre Ríos, Neuquén, Tierra del Fuego and more). UBA XXI has no age limit, no residency restriction and — uniquely — allows students still in their last year of secundario to enrol as alumnos externos. It offers the 2 common subjects plus most oriented and many career-specific subjects, although a few career-specific subjects can only be taken presencially at CBC.
3. The Routing Decision Tree
The router maps three orthogonal axes to a track. If the candidate is 25+ without secundario, they are funnelled through the Art. 7° aptitude exam first. If secundario is incomplete and the candidate is under 25, only UBA XXI accepts them, as alumnos externos. With secundario completed, residence in CABA/GBA and the ability to attend presencially default to CBC; residence in the interior, abroad, or attendance blockers (work, health, family) route to UBA XXI.
4. Faculty-Specific Continuation Cycles
After CBC, several faculties enter their own internal cycles before the career proper begins. Medicina continues into Ciclo Biomédico → Ciclo Clínico → Práctica Final Obligatoria (PFO). Odontología, Farmacia y Bioquímica and Veterinaria each have their own ciclos básicos following CBC. Ciencias Económicas follows CBC with the Ciclo General (Ciclo Básico Profesional). Other faculties — Derecho, Ingeniería, Arquitectura, Sociales, Filosofía y Letras, Exactas, Agronomía and Psicología — go directly from CBC into the career plan.
5. Article 7° — Adults Without Secundario
Statute Article 7° lets candidates aged 25 or older without secundario completo sit a special admission exam evaluating general culture and aptitude for the chosen career. Each faculty administers its own version. Passing the exam grants ingresante status; the candidate then enrols in CBC or UBA XXI like any other student. This route does not apply to applicants under 25.
6. The Common Misconception Trap
Two myths drive most routing errors. First, UBA XXI is not a parallel degree — it grants the same CBC equivalencies a CBC presencial student earns, no more. Second, the under-25-without-secundario applicant cannot use Art. 7°; their only option is to enrol in UBA XXI as alumno externo and finish secundario in parallel, then formalise enrolment. The router below enforces both rules so candidates do not waste an admission cycle filing for the wrong track.
