Alberta Student Loan Remission and Forgiveness: Which Programs Reduce What You Owe

Alberta itself does not run a standalone provincial forgiveness program, but eligible Alberta borrowers can access the federal Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program for doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, and, from December 31, 2025, several other health professions working in underserved rural or remote communities, forgiving up to $60,000 or $30,000 of the federal loan balance. The Repayment Assistance Plan is the main option for everyone else, lowering or pausing payments based on income.
💵 Grants you already received never need repayment, unlike your Canada Student Loan and Alberta Student Loan balances
🎓 The federal Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program forgives up to $60,000 for doctors and eligible medical residents, and up to $30,000 for nurses and nurse practitioners, in underserved rural or remote communities with a population of 30,000 or fewer
⏱️ The Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) adjusts your required payment to match your income, and can reduce it to zero
📩 RAP is not automatic. You apply through the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) and reapply as your income changes
Alberta does not advertise a standalone forgiveness program
Searching for "Alberta student loan forgiveness" turns up plenty of general advice, but the Alberta Student Aid repayment section lists two things: information on repaying your loan, and the Repayment Assistance Plan. Alberta Student Aid does not run its own provincial remission or forgiveness program alongside those two on the current site. A federal program can still forgive part of your loan if you work in the right profession and location, covered below.
Federal loan forgiveness for doctors and nurses in underserved areas
The Canada Student Loan Forgiveness for Family Doctors and Nurses program forgives part of the federal portion of your Canada Student Loan if you work as a family doctor, family-medicine resident, nurse, or nurse practitioner in an underserved rural or remote community. Family doctors and eligible residents can have up to $60,000 forgiven, and nurses and nurse practitioners can have up to $30,000 forgiven. From December 31, 2025, the program expanded to roughly 10 additional health professions, and "rural or remote" now covers communities with a population of 30,000 or fewer. This program is administered federally and applies to any Alberta borrower with a federal Canada Student Loan portion. It only forgives the federal Canada Student Loan balance, not your separate Alberta Student Loan. Confirm your current eligibility and application steps directly with the National Student Loans Service Centre before assuming your profession or location qualifies.
Grants: money you never repay
The clearest way your Alberta funding package reduces what you owe is built in before you graduate. Any Canada Student Grant or Alberta grant you were assessed for during your studies is non-repayable from the start. It never converts into a debt, and it never shows up on your repayment statement. Confirm what you actually received as grant money versus loan money in your Alberta Student Aid account, since the two get disbursed together but behave completely differently after you graduate.
The Repayment Assistance Plan
Once you enter repayment on your Canada Student Loan and your Alberta Student Loan, the Repayment Assistance Plan is the main relief option if your income cannot cover the scheduled payment. RAP recalculates your required monthly payment against your income and family size, and can bring your payment down to an amount you can manage, including zero dollars a month in periods of very low income. You apply through the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC), which services both the federal and Alberta portions of your loan for most borrowers, and you reapply periodically as your income changes rather than getting a one-time approval that lasts forever.
RAP is relief on your required payment, not automatic forgiveness of your balance. Interest still applies to your Alberta Student Loan while you use RAP, so check your current statement to see how your balance moves during a low-payment period.
Interest: where Alberta differs from the federal loan
The Government of Canada eliminated interest on the federal Canada Student Loan starting in 2023, but Alberta Student Aid still runs its own interest rate on the Alberta Student Loan, separate from the federal rate. Alberta Student Aid features an interest rate lookup prominently on its site, which only matters if the provincial loan still carries a rate. Check the current Alberta Student Loan interest rate directly through your account or the Service Centre before you plan how fast your balance grows or shrinks, since this figure is reviewed and can change.
What to do if you are struggling to repay
Contact the NSLSC and Alberta Student Aid before you miss a payment, not after. Missed payments affect your credit and your ability to access RAP smoothly, while a borrower who calls ahead of a due date usually has more options. Ask specifically whether the federal forgiveness program or any other remission or reduction option applies to your profession or region, since Alberta Student Aid and the NSLSC can confirm what is active this academic year rather than what circulated in older advice online.
What triggers repayment
Repayment on both your Canada Student Loan and your Alberta Student Loan begins after a non-repayment period once you leave full-time studies, whether you graduate, withdraw, or drop below full-time status. Update your enrolment status with Alberta Student Aid and the NSLSC as soon as it changes, since an outdated enrolment record can trigger repayment earlier than you expect.
Applying for RAP
Apply for the Repayment Assistance Plan through your NSLSC online account before your payment comes due, not after you fall behind. You submit your income information, and NSLSC recalculates what you owe each month based on that income and your family size. Reapply on the schedule NSLSC sets, since an approval does not last indefinitely and lapses if you do not renew it.
Track your federal and Alberta balances separately
Your NSLSC account shows your federal Canada Student Loan balance, while your Alberta Student Aid account shows your Alberta Student Loan balance. Check both regularly, since a payment or a RAP adjustment on one does not automatically apply to the other, and a borrower who only watches one account can miss a problem building on the second loan.
Consolidating advice from outside sources
Third-party guides and forums often describe loan forgiveness rules from years ago or from a different province, since remission and forgiveness programs have opened and closed across Canada over time. Treat any claim about a specific Alberta forgiveness program you find outside the official Alberta Student Aid site as unverified until you confirm it directly with the Service Centre, especially if the source does not name a specific current program or date.
