CEGEP Admission Requirements for Students Coming From Outside Quebec
By Muntasir • Published Sep 25, 2025 • Updated Sep 27, 2026 • Admissions & Applications, Canadian Universities & Colleges
Quebec CEGEPs accept students from other provinces directly into a DEC program because a full Canadian high school diploma already covers Quebec's Secondary 5 requirement. Apply through SRAM (Montreal region), SRACQ (Quebec City) or SRASL (Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean) depending on the CEGEP you want, and pick an English-language CEGEP like Dawson, Vanier, John Abbott or Champlain if you are not fluent in French.
🎓 Apply online through the regional admission service that covers your target CEGEP, not the CEGEP itself.
📩 Submit official transcripts and proof of your Grade 12 diploma or graduation status.
⏱️ Regular admission rounds open each fall for the following winter or fall intake.
🏠 Anglophone CEGEPs run programs in English. Francophone CEGEPs require French-language ability.
Why your Grade 12 diploma is enough
Quebec students finish high school after Secondary 5, one year earlier than students in other provinces finish Grade 12. CEGEP (college of general and vocational education) fills that extra year and adds one to two more years of pre-university or technical study before university. Because a Grade 12 diploma from Ontario, British Columbia or any other province already covers an extra year of schooling, students holding one qualify for direct entry into CEGEP without repeating Secondary 5 courses.
You still need to meet the entry requirements of the specific Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC) program you choose. A pre-university Science program asks for stronger math and science marks than a Social Science or Arts and Letters program. Check the prerequisite list on the program page before you apply.
Where to apply
Quebec does not have one shared CEGEP application portal. Three regional services split the province, and you apply through whichever one covers the CEGEP you want:
SRAM covers 32 CEGEPs in the greater Montreal region, including Dawson, Vanier and John Abbott.
SRASL covers CEGEPs in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.
Create an account on the correct portal, list your program choices in order of preference, and upload your documents there. A CEGEP outside these three networks takes applications directly instead of through a regional portal.
Documents you need
Official high school transcripts, sent directly from your school or school board where possible.
Proof of graduation or a statement confirming you are on track to graduate by the CEGEP start date.
Any program-specific documents, such as a portfolio for an arts program or references for a competitive technical program.
Send transcripts early. Quebec admission offices process thousands of out-of-province applications every year, and a missing transcript is the most common reason a file sits incomplete past the deadline.
English or French CEGEP
You do not need to speak French to study at an anglophone CEGEP. Dawson College, Vanier College, John Abbott College and Champlain College (with campuses in Saint-Lambert, Saint-Lawrence and Lennoxville) teach programs in English and are the standard choice for out-of-province students without French fluency.
Francophone CEGEPs teach every course in French, including math and science. Apply to one only if you already follow lectures, write assignments and pass exams in French. Some offer francization courses for students close to that level, but these add time before regular coursework starts.
Application timing
Regular admission rounds run on a yearly cycle: the round for winter intake opens in the fall, and the round for the following fall intake opens the following winter and spring. Popular anglophone CEGEPs and contingented (capacity-limited) programs fill fast, so submit your file as early as the portal allows rather than waiting for the deadline.
Missing the regular round does not end your options. Some CEGEPs and programs open late admission rounds, and non-contingented programs often keep accepting applications after the main deadline passes (SRAM ).
Budget for tuition
Quebec residents attend CEGEP without tuition fees. Out-of-province Canadian students pay tuition once accepted, unlike Quebec residents, so factor tuition and housing costs into your decision alongside the program itself. Fee amounts vary by CEGEP and change between academic years, so confirm the current rate directly with your target CEGEP rather than relying on a figure from a different year.
