How the GRE Works

What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test used by graduate and business schools worldwide to assess candidates' readiness for advanced studies.

The test covers Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The updated shorter format takes less than 2 hours to complete.

Score Scales

Verbal & Quantitative

Both sections are scored on a scale of 130 to 170 in 1-point increments. The combined score ranges from 260 to 340.

Analytical Writing

The Analytical Writing section is scored separately on a scale of 0.0 to 6.0 in half-point (0.5) increments. It does not affect the combined score.

Combined Score Interpretation

ETS only publishes percentiles for each section separately, so the combined Verbal+Quant percentile shown here is a derived approximation, not an official ETS figure.

How to Prepare for the GRE

  • 1. Enhance Vocabulary: Read high-quality, academic texts to learn words in context instead of memorizing definitions in isolation.
  • 2. Master Core Concepts: Revisit fundamental algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. Precision is just as critical as speed in Quantitative.
  • 3. Take Timed Practice Tests: Use the official ETS practice software to simulate actual test conditions.
  • 4. Analyze Your Mistakes: Carefully review why you missed questions to adjust your test-taking strategy.
  • 5. Improve Essay Formatting: Structure your AWA essays logically with precise arguments, clear evidence, and coherent transitions.
  • 6. Manage Pacing: Spend about 1.5 minutes per question in Verbal, and 1.75 minutes per question in Quantitative.
