Admission Verdict
How It Works
1. EJU Triple-Gate Admission Logic
The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), administered by JASSO, is the gateway exam for undergraduate study in Japan. It is scored across four subject groups:
- Japanese as a Foreign Language: 0–400 (Reading + Listening + Listening-Reading) plus 0–50 Writing.
- Science: 0–200, choose 2 from Physics / Chemistry / Biology (science track).
- Japan & the World (Sogo): 0–200 (humanities track).
- Mathematics: 0–200, Course 1 (humanities) or Course 2 (science / engineering).
Top national universities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka) enforce a strict Triple-Gate: the Japanese subject alone must clear the tier minimum, each non-Japanese subject must independently clear its own tier minimum, AND the aggregate must exceed the combined cut-off. A single weak subject collapses the application even with a high total.
2. JLPT → Visa Entitlement Mapping
The Immigration Services Agency of Japan publishes Japanese-language thresholds for each Status of Residence:
- N5: Sufficient for language-school student visas (Ryūgaku, entry level).
- N4: Minimum for Specified Skilled Worker Type 1 (SSW-i) in most sectors; JFT-Basic A2 is an accepted equivalent.
- N3: Senmon gakkou admission floor; EPA care-worker entry; SSW Type 2 in selected sectors.
- N2: University & graduate admission baseline; Engineer / Specialist in Humanities visa baseline; HSP +10 points.
- N1: Translation & interpretation Engineer visa; HSP +15 points; permanent-residency fast-track via HSP.
JLPT pass rules are strict: section minimums (≥19/60 per section, or ≥38/120 for combined sections in N4/N5) must be cleared in addition to the overall pass mark — a failing section blocks the certificate regardless of total.
