How MEXT Scholarship Screening Works

The Official MEXT GPA Scale

Unlike standard 4.0 or 5.0 university Grade Point Averages, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) employs a standardized 3.00-point formula. Every applicant must map their local letter grades, numeric percentages, or academic tiers into one of four specialized Grade Point (GP) groups:

  • GP 3: Assigned to outstanding, high, or S/A tiers (usually 80–100%).
  • GP 2: Assigned to solid, upper-intermediate, or B tiers (usually 70–79%).
  • GP 1: Assigned to standard passing, or C/D tiers (usually 60–69%).
  • GP 0: Assigned to failure or remedial F tiers (59% or below).

The final computation uses weighted credits, where fail credits (GP 0) still dilute your average. A mathematical threshold of 2.30 / 3.00 is legally mandatory.

The Double Language Gate

Depending on your degree track (Natural Sciences vs. Social Sciences/Humanities), candidates require solid proficiency benchmarks:

  • English Track: Requires a confirmed CEFR score of **B2 or above** (equivalent to an academic IELTS 5.5+ or TOEFL iBT 72+). Crucially, while MEXT accepts overall bands, certain Japanese universities apply modular sub-score gates blocking candidates with single-skill deficits below 5.5.
  • Japanese Track: Generally mandates a **JLPT N2 or N1** for social science fields. Natural science fields are more flexible if English proficiency is high, but Japanese mastery greatly boosts secondary screening success.

MEXT does not publish mandatory TOEFL, IELTS or CEFR cut-offs; the specific values used here (e.g. TOEFL iBT 95/72/42) are tool-chosen reference points for guidance only, so confirm the exact thresholds with your target university and embassy.
