πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬ Nigeria: WAEC O-Level Grade-to-Points Converter

Convert your WASSCE A1–F9 letter grades into the exact point values Nigerian universities feed into their admission aggregates β€” with the WAEC five-credit gate enforced.

The 10-point scale (A1=10 … C6=5) is used by UNN, ABU and UNIABUJA inside the 50-20-30 blend. The 4-point scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1) is the lighter alternative some faculties apply when O-Level contributes 20% of the aggregate.

UNILAG, UI and OAU reject combined sittings outright. UNN, ABU and UNIABUJA accept two sittings with a 20% point penalty applied to the O-Level contribution.

JAMB mandates that English Language and Mathematics occupy two of the five slots for the vast majority of degree courses. Select the WAEC/NECO grade for each subject below.

D7, E8 and F9 do NOT count as credits regardless of how many subjects you pass. JAMB requires five distinct C6-or-better credits including English and Mathematics.

How It Works

1. The Official WAEC 9-Grade Scale

WAEC's WASSCE awards nine grades. Only A1 through C6 count as credit passes for university admission. D7 and E8 are bare passes β€” they earn a certificate entry but do not satisfy any JAMB-recognised admission gate. F9 is an outright fail.

  • A1: 75–100% (Excellent)
  • B2: 70–74% (Very Good)
  • B3: 65–69% (Good)
  • C4: 60–64% (Credit)
  • C5: 55–59% (Credit)
  • C6: 50–54% (Credit)
  • D7 / E8: Pass β€” does not satisfy university entry
  • F9: Fail

2. The Two Point Conversion Scales

The 10-point scale (A1=10, B2=9, B3=8, C4=7, C5=6, C6=5) is the published model UNN, ABU and UNIABUJA feed into the JAMB 50-20-30 blend, where the five-subject total (max 50) is divided by 50 and multiplied by 20 to yield the 20% O-Level contribution.

The 4-point scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1) is the simpler alternative some faculties use when O-Level still contributes 20% but the institution prefers a coarser band. Max total is 20; that figure becomes the O-Level contribution directly. This 4-point mapping is not an official fixed WAEC or JAMB table β€” individual institutions set their own screening formulas, so confirm the exact scale your target university uses.

3. The Five-Credit Gate

Independent of any point total, a single D7 in English Language, Mathematics, or any of the three course-relevant subjects voids your eligibility. This calculator marks gate status as FAILED the moment a D7/E8/F9 enters any of the five slots, even if your numerical total looks competitive. UNILAG, UI and OAU enforce the gate but ignore the points; UNN, ABU and UNIABUJA enforce the gate and consume the points.

4. Sittings & the 20% Penalty

If you cleared the five credits across two sittings, the O-Level contribution is multiplied by 0.8 β€” on both the 10-point and 4-point scales β€” to reflect the published UNN/ABU/UNIABUJA penalty. UNILAG, UI and OAU reject two-sitting combinations outright β€” the WAEC gate fails before the points are even read.
