π¬π Ghana: WASSCE Aggregate Summation Tracker
Sum your A1βF9 grades into the official 6-subject WASSCE aggregate used by GTEC, public universities, and HND/Polytechnic admissions β with the credit-pass gate on English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science applied automatically.
WASSCE Aggregate
Lower is better. 6 = six A1s (perfect), 36 = the public-university cut-off, 54 = six F9s.
How It Works
The WASSCE Grading Scale
The West African Examinations Council awards each subject a grade from A1 (Excellent) down to F9 (Fail). For tertiary placement, each grade is given a numerical aggregate value identical to its letter index.
| Grade | Interpretation | Aggregate value |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Excellent | 1 |
| B2 | Very good | 2 |
| B3 | Good | 3 |
| C4 | Credit | 4 |
| C5 | Credit | 5 |
| C6 | Credit (minimum university pass) | 6 |
| D7 | Pass | 7 |
| E8 | Pass | 8 |
| F9 | Fail | 9 |
The Six-Subject Aggregate Formula
The aggregate is the sum of the candidate's best three core subjects (English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies β best 3 of these 4) plus the best three elective subjects. The theoretical range is therefore 6 to 54.
Public universities (GTEC-accredited) set the general entry cut-off at aggregate 36 or better, meaning every counted subject must be at least a C6 credit. Polytechnics and HND programmes typically accept up to aggregate 48 with some D7/E8 grades in electives β but still require credit in English and Core Mathematics.
The Credit-Pass Gate (the regulatory trap)
NaΓ―ve calculators just add the numbers and stop. The official rule has a second gate: even if your aggregate is 36 or better, you are disqualified from public-university admission if you score worse than C6 in any of English Language, Core Mathematics, or Integrated Science.
A candidate with A1s in three electives and Social Studies but D7 in Core Maths can hit aggregate 12 on paper and still be rejected. This tracker raises a hard red flag the moment that gate fails, regardless of how strong the rest of the scores are.
Programme Tiers Observed in Recent Cut-offs
Top-tier competitive courses cluster very low on the scale:
- Medicine / Dentistry (UG, KNUST, UCC) β aggregate 6 to 10.
- Engineering, Pharmacy, Actuarial Science β aggregate 6 to 18.
- General humanities, Business, Education β aggregate up to 24.
- Open public-university entry β aggregate up to 36.
- HND / Polytechnic tracks β aggregate up to 48 with credit in English and Core Maths.
