North Africa: Bac "Mention" (Honors) Scholarship Predictor

1. Mention Bands (Standard Maghreb Scale)

• Passable: 10.00 – 11.99 / 20 (baccalauréat awarded, no mention bursary).
• Assez Bien: 12.00 – 13.99 / 20.
• Bien: 14.00 – 15.99 / 20.
• Très Bien: 16.00 – 17.99 / 20 — scholarship gate.
• Excellent (Algeria only): ≥ 18.00 / 20 — Bourse présidentielle tier.

The bands derive from the historical Napoleonic baccalauréat scale and are codified inside each country's ministerial exam regulations.

2. Country-Specific Bursaries

• Tunisia: Mission universitaire scholarships and bourses sur critères de mérite open at Très Bien; Bien candidates compete for the loan/aid tiers.
• Morocco: Programme ISTIHQAQ (1 000 DH/month × 10 months × 3 years) plus Excellence-Major AEFE for francophone tracks — Très Bien is the de facto cut.
• Algeria: Bourse présidentielle for Excellent (≥ 18), competitive merit aid for Très Bien (≥ 16).

3. The Triple-Gate Lock

A high average alone does not lock a Mention. Examination juries can withhold the honor — and the bursary — when any mandatory core subject is failed (< 8 / 20). This calculator therefore requires both the overall average AND the lowest core subject note, refusing to issue a Mention when the core floor is breached even if the average reaches 16.

4. Stream Sensitivity

Sciences streams (Mathématiques, Sciences Expérimentales) carry the largest pool of fully-funded seats. Lettres and Sport streams must hit Très Bien with a healthier margin since fewer reserved bursaries exist in their faculties.
