North Africa: Medical Residency Bridging Tool (DFMS / DFMSA)

The DFMS (Diplôme de Formation Médicale Spécialisée) and DFMSA (Diplôme de Formation Médicale Spécialisée Approfondie) are the two formal bridge diplomas that allow physicians from outside the EU, EEA, Switzerland and Andorra — including Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian doctors — to complete specialized clinical training in French university hospitals.

The pathway split is strict: DFMS targets residents who are still in the middle of their specialty in their home country and have completed at least four semesters (two years) of training. It lasts 1 to 3 years (2 to 6 semesters). DFMSA targets fully qualified specialists who already hold the national specialty diploma and want a 6-to-12 month deep-immersion fellowship. During either programme the candidate is paid under the "Faisant Fonction d'Interne" (FFI) status.

French language proficiency of B2 minimum (TCF, TEF or DELF) is required, unless the entire medical curriculum was conducted in French. Crucially, neither diploma grants the right to practice medicine in France afterwards — to do that, candidates must follow a separate Autorisation d'Exercice procedure.
