Overview
Technologie de la production horticole agroenvironnementale (TPHA) is a technical DEC program that Collège Lionel-Groulx has offered for over twenty years, aimed at students drawn to nature, plants, outdoor work, and environmentally responsible food production. According to the program page, coursework covers planning, managing and implementing greenhouse, field, and sheltered-crop production of vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants; applying sustainable-agriculture practices such as integrated pest management, organic production, and soil, water and resource conservation; providing horticultural and agri-environmental advisory services; working on environmental infrastructure such as riparian buffers and windbreaks; and carrying out horticultural research and development projects. As with the college's related agricultural program, program-specific courses are split across the Sainte-Thérèse, Saint-Eustache and Mirabel sites, with general-education courses taught at the main campus, requiring students to travel between the college, the school farm, and placement or project sites. Starting the program requires passing the class 5 driving test or holding a class 8 tractor permit. There is no admission quota, and students who have completed relevant vocational (DEP) coursework in horticulture or horticultural production may receive course credit. The DEC opens access to university programs including agronomy, landscape architecture, biology and agri-environmental engineering, and leads to careers such as research assistant, crop supervisor, and horticultural technical advisor for cooperative and private organizations.

Admission Requirements: The program page defers to the college's general admission conditions: applicants qualify with a DES, a DEP plus Secondary 5 language of instruction, Secondary 5 second language and Secondary 4 mathematics, or training and experience the college judges sufficient, and must show adequate spoken and written French; anyone without a francophone-sector DES must pass the Bright test, scoring at least 3.7 in the written part, the oral part, and overall. Students who completed the DEP in Horticulture et jardinerie (5288) or Production horticole (5348) may be credited for certain courses. Before the program starts, candidates must pass the practical Class 5 driver's-licence exam or hold a Class 8 "tractor operation" licence, and must budget for specialised safety equipment (steel-toed boots, gloves, safety glasses, field clothing) purchased ahead of the term.
