The University of British Columbia is a public research university in British Columbia, established by British Columbia's University Act of 1908 and opened to students in 1915.
It operates two campuses: the main Point Grey campus on Vancouver's western peninsula and a smaller campus in Kelowna, in the Okanagan Valley. Enrolment across both campuses stands at 72,100 students, of whom 60,309 study at Vancouver; international students make up 25.4 per cent of the Vancouver student body and 17.4 per cent at Okanagan.
The university employs 20,662 faculty and staff and granted 15,942 degrees in 2025, and counts more than 435,000 alumni in 145 countries. Admission Requirements: UBC assesses undergraduate applicants on academic results together with a written Personal Profile, and one deadline covers Canadian and international applicants alike. DOMESTIC (Canadian secondary school): the minimum qualification is graduation from a recognised secondary school, with at least six Grade 12-level academic courses recommended. Every file gets an overall assessment across Grade 11 and 12 academic coursework plus a core assessment on the courses relevant to the chosen degree, so required subjects differ by degree: English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 for every program; Pre-Calculus 12 added for Commerce, International Economics, Science and Sustainability; Chemistry 12 and Physics 12 added for Engineering. UBC publishes no institution-wide entry average - each program competes against its own applicant pool. INTERNATIONAL: admission is on a recognised university-preparation credential plus the subject prerequisites of the chosen degree. UBC's published minimum standings include a completed IB Diploma with six subjects (three Standard and three Higher Level); GCE qualifications covering at least six academic subject areas including English, with at least three academic A Levels or six AS Levels; the Baccalaureat General or Baccalaureat Francais International; the Singapore-Cambridge GCE with six subject areas including English, three at H2 and two at H1; a Chinese senior secondary diploma together with Gaokao results; and, for other systems, graduation from an approved university-preparation program in a twelve-year education system. Applicants from an English-medium secondary school must also show a final grade of at least 70 per cent in Grade 11 or Grade 12 English. ENGLISH (undergraduate, all applicants): IELTS Academic 6.5 with no part below 6.0; TOEFL iBT on either scale - 90 with 22 reading and listening and 21 writing and speaking for a test sat before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall with 5 listening, 4.5 reading and writing and 4 speaking on the 1-6 scale used from that date; Duolingo English Test 125 with 115 reading and listening and 120 writing and speaking; PTE Academic 65 with no section below 60; CAEL 70; Cambridge English Scale 180; or Level 600 of the UBC Certificate in English Language - all reached in a single sitting. Exemptions include at least four consecutive years of full-time schooling delivered in English - either in a country whose principal language is English, or at a recognised English-medium international school elsewhere - which must take in BC Grade 12 English or its equivalent; IB English A at 5, AP English at 4, GCE A Level English at grade B, 6 transferable credits of first-year post-secondary English, or a degree taught in English from an accredited university in a country where English is the principal language. MINIMUMS DIFFER BY LEVEL: graduate study is governed separately by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies - normally a four-year bachelor's degree averaging in the B+ range (76 per cent at UBC) over third- and fourth-year courses, or 12 credits of third- or fourth-year work in the A range, for a master's; doctoral entry normally requires a master's degree (or equivalent) from an approved institution with clear evidence of research ability or potential, or a bachelor's degree plus one year of study in a master's program with at least 9 credits at the 500 level or above at first-class standing - the Faculty sets no grade bar on the master's itself - with English minimums of IELTS Academic 6.5 (6.0 in each component) or TOEFL iBT 90 with 22 reading and listening and 21 writing and speaking for a test sat before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall with 5 listening, 4.5 reading and writing and 4 speaking from that date, and individual programs free to ask for more. HOW TO APPLY (undergraduate): one online application through EducationPlannerBC, opening in early October, carries a first and a second degree choice, which may sit in different faculties or on different campuses. The fee is CAD 78.50 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents and CAD 173.25 for international students who need a study permit. Several programs - among them Music, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Midwifery and Design in Architecture - also require a supplemental application, portfolio, audition or interview.
