Overview

This program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Sciences, with an Honours option, through Memorial's Faculty of Science on the St. John's campus; the department is based at the Ocean Sciences Centre in Logy Bay, roughly 10 kilometres from the main campus. It examines the global marine environment from physical, chemical, geological, and biological perspectives, covering topics such as coastal and deep-sea food webs, marine animal ecology, physiology and behaviour, plankton dynamics, the effects of pollution and climate change, and aquaculture and fisheries management. The degree runs over four years and is research-intensive, with field and laboratory work built into the curriculum; part-time and summer research positions are also available to undergraduates. Students enter the Faculty of Science directly from high school with the required mathematics and laboratory science background, then complete a set of foundational courses before formally declaring the Ocean Sciences major. Related minors in Oceanography and in Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries Ecology are offered alongside the major. The program suits students aiming for marine science and environmental careers, including laboratory technician, research assistant, marine science educator, fisheries officer, nature interpreter, aquarium curator, and environmental analyst or consultant roles.
