Master of Arts (Philosophy)

The Master of Arts in Philosophy at Memorial University is a thesis-based graduate program on the St. John's campus, structured so that full-time students can complete it in one academic year of three semesters, with a part-time option available over a longer period. Coursework and thesis research draw on departmental strength in the history of philosophy alongside ethics and political philosophy, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of science, religion, and mind, as well as phenomenology, existentialism, aesthetics, and hermeneutics. Students take part in discussion groups and colloquia as part of the program's research community. The program suits students with a strong undergraduate background in philosophy who want a compact, research-intensive master's focused on close engagement with philosophical problems, whether as preparation for doctoral study or as a standalone credential emphasizing analytical and argumentative skills.
