At Okanagan College in Kelowna, Canada, Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Certificate is offered as a certificate in Health Sciences programme. The programme runs for 1 year, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 5,943 per total for local students.
This full-time certificate runs for one year and totals 814 hours, with theory delivered at a distance, mostly through instructor-led online classes with some self-paced content, followed by a 400-hour supervised hospital practicum. The program outline lists ten courses: eight classroom theory courses cover the decontamination, cleaning, processing, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical devices, supported by anatomy and physiology, microbiology, infection control, medical terminology, and workplace relations, along with quality assurance and hands-on handling and packaging of more than 100 basic surgical instruments, plus a hands-on workshop and the practicum. Classes run Monday to Thursday, with some scheduled Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission requires B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent (or being at least 19 and out of secondary school for a year), English 12 at a minimum of 60 percent or an accepted alternative, the physical capacity for lifting, standing, and repetitive movement, current immunizations, a negative tuberculosis test within six months, and a clear criminal record check. The practicum, roughly ten weeks long, is arranged within the Interior Health Authority region, with students responsible for their own transportation and accommodation. Graduates become eligible to write Canadian Standards Association and IAHCSMM certification exams.
