Overview
The Master of Arts in Modern Languages Education at UBC Vancouver is a thesis-based degree for language educators who want to ground their practice in research on how additional languages are learned and taught. The 30-credit program, of which at least 24 credits must be at the graduate level, combines coursework with a thesis; every student takes the research methods course EDUC 500, and the degree can be pursued full-time or part-time. Themes across the program include second language acquisition, second language reading and writing, language socialization, language and identity, bi- and multilingual pedagogies and multimodality, language policy and planning, assessment, intercultural education, technology in language teaching, discourse analysis and critical applied linguistics. Faculty expertise spans second language teaching methodology, applied and critical applied linguistics, intercultural communication, content-based language education and language policy. Applicants are not expected to line up a supervisor in advance; a pro-tem supervisor is assigned after admission. The program suits graduates in an additional language, second language education, linguistics or a related area, ideally with two years of formal teaching experience, and prepares leaders for second language and Indigenous language education.

Admission Requirements: UBC's admission page for this MA sets a minimum GPA of 76% (B+ range) and requires either an approved Bachelor's degree with one year of teacher education for K-12 teachers, a five-year Bachelor's degree in Education, or a four-year Bachelor's degree in Education or an appropriate field with prerequisites completed; holders of three-year Canadian degrees need a fourth or honours year. Applicants from outside Canada whose prior institution did not instruct in English, tested within 24 months of applying, must submit IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with no section below 6.5, or a Duolingo score of 130 with no section below 120. The program also requires a sample of scholarly writing up to 30 pages, a CV, a 500-word statement of intent describing the proposed research, and three letters of recommendation with at least one academic reference, plus official transcripts and degree certificates.

Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027.
