Overview
The Master of Arts in Music Education at UBC Vancouver is a thesis-based degree within a set of music education graduate offerings designed for working teachers, researchers, administrators, curriculum developers and future university faculty. Students normally take 18 credits of senior coursework and then complete a thesis under a faculty supervisor. Areas of concentration include teacher education, music and media studies, early childhood music, conducting, cultural studies, curriculum development, music pedagogy and music-related technologies, and thesis research may draw on qualitative traditions such as philosophy, history, psychology and arts-based inquiry or on quantitative designs including experiments and surveys. The program is delivered in person. Applicants are expected to have completed teacher education or a four-year degree in education and to bring at least two years of paid professional experience in educational settings. Graduates of UBC's music education programs have moved into leadership positions across North America, Europe and Asia.

Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
