Overview
The Master of Science in Neuroscience is a research-oriented, thesis-based degree run as an interdepartmental program at UBC, drawing on more than 120 faculty members from over 20 departments across the Faculties of Medicine, Science and Arts. Students begin research at the outset of their studies and complete two core courses, one in molecular and cellular neuroscience and one in systems neuroscience, plus electives chosen with their supervisor. Research topics range across basic and clinical neuroscience, and the cross-departmental structure opens collaborations beyond the usual disciplinary boundaries. A supervisor is required for admission, although a commitment from one does not have to be in place at the time of application. Work takes place in the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health on the Vancouver campus and in laboratory and clinical research areas at UBC Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital. Most students finish in a little over two years, and the MSc prepares graduates for public- or private-sector roles or for PhD study; recent alumni have gone to organizations such as the Weston Brain Institute, BC Cancer and Science World.

Admission Requirements: UBC's admission page for this MSc sets the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) as a baseline, noting individual programs may set it higher, and requires a Bachelor's degree without mandating a specific discipline. Applicants from outside Canada whose prior institution did not instruct in English, tested within 24 months of applying, must submit IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with no section below 6.5, TOEFL iBT overall 100 with Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21 and Speaking 21, or a Duolingo score of 130 with no section below 120. The GRE is not required. Applicants submit two letters of reference and a statement of interest, and while contacting a potential supervisor is encouraged before applying, a supervisor is required as a condition of admission rather than of the application itself.

Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
