Overview
This MEd in Social Studies Education sits in UBC's Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy and is designed for practising teachers who want to deepen how they think about, and teach, the social studies curriculum. It is a course-based degree of roughly 18 credits with no research thesis, taken in person at the Vancouver campus and completed by most students in about two years. Faculty and graduate work in the area range across historical thinking and historical consciousness, the history and politics of curriculum, moral education, anti-oppressive and equity-focused pedagogy, gender, and visual culture and media literacy, and students shape their coursework around one of these interests with an assigned academic advisor. Because there is no thesis, applicants do not need to line up a supervisor before applying, but they are expected to bring a teaching qualification or education degree together with a couple of years of professional experience in an educational setting and a statement setting out the area they intend to pursue.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies sets a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) as the admission threshold. International applicants whose prior instruction was not in English must submit a language test taken within 24 months of application: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.5, TOEFL iBT overall 92 (all sections at least 22), or the Duolingo English Test overall 125. The application requires three letters of reference, a statement of intent describing the area of focus, a current resume, and transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended; the most recent cycle's September intake closed to both Canadian and international applicants on 1 December.
