Overview
The MSc in Statistics at UBC, offered since 1983, lets students finish by thesis, by a final project, or through an eight-month full-time co-op placement outside the department, so the degree can lean academic or applied. Coursework builds method depth across statistical inference, multivariate analysis, robustness, nonparametrics, design of experiments, Bayesian methods and computational statistics, while faculty research reaches into biostatistics, environmetrics, machine learning, data mining and computational molecular biology. A biostatistics option is available in collaboration with the School of Population and Public Health. Graduate students also run the department's own statistical consulting service, gaining paid professional experience before they finish. Most candidates complete in under two years.

Admission Requirements: Admission follows UBC's Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies baseline of a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC); the department may set a higher bar and admission remains competitive even above the minimum. Applicants are expected to have completed calculus and multivariable calculus, linear algebra with proof-construction ability, an introductory probability course covering axioms, distributions and limit theorems, introductory statistical methods, statistical inference or mathematical statistics, and either regression analysis or design of experiments/ANOVA; proficiency in R is required, with C, C++ or Python experience recommended. Applicants from non-English-instruction institutions must submit a test from the last 24 months: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with no section below 6.5, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall on the scale from January 2026 with no section below 4.0, or Duolingo English Test 125 overall. A one-page statement of interest and a CV are required; the GRE is not required.

These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
