Overview
The LLM in Taxation at UBC's Peter A. Allard School of Law is a one-year, full-time, non-thesis degree that can also be taken part-time. It is built to give graduates technical depth in tax law well beyond a first law degree or a related discipline, preparing them for specialised tax roles in private practice or the public sector. Students complete 30 credits: a required 6-credit Foundations in Tax Law course, at least 24 elective credits in tax law and policy, and up to 6 credits from other law courses. For most full-time students this means two academic terms plus the compulsory introductory intensive delivered in July and August. Taught in person at Allard Hall on the Vancouver campus.

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Master's Degree (LLM) in Taxation generally requires a J.D. or LL.B., though the program also considers candidates holding another relevant undergraduate degree who have a superior academic record and significant work experience in the field of tax; the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' general minimum academic average, the B+ range (76% at UBC), applies. The GRE is not required. Applicants from outside Canada whose prior instruction was not in English must meet UBC's English Language Admission Standard, tested within the last 24 months: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5, TOEFL 5.0 overall with no section below 4.0, or Duolingo English Test 130 overall with no section below 120. The application also requires three references, transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, and a statement of interest.

Start Date:July
Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
