Overview
This PhD is offered by the Department of History, Classics, and Religious Studies at the University of Alberta, supporting research across a broad range of geographical, thematic, and methodological specializations in History and Classics. The thesis-based, on-campus program requires a minimum of 12-16 units of coursework, normally completed by the end of the fall semester of the second year, followed by an oral comprehensive examination covering major and minor fields, a written candidacy examination based on a thesis proposal, and a doctoral thesis normally 250-400 pages in length. Students must demonstrate competence in a language other than English and complete a minimum two-year residence requirement. Program length normally takes four to six years depending on the student's background and research, with a maximum completion time of six years set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

Admission Requirements: For the PhD program in History, the Department's minimum admission requirements are an acceptable MA degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.5 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution, calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework. Where applicable, applicants must provide proof of English Language Proficiency. All applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, and a Statement of Purpose; PhD applicants must also submit a sample of recent written work such as an MA thesis excerpt, course essay, or published article.
