Philosophy: Doctoral Degree (PhD)

Admission Requirements: The Philosophy PhD page states that applicants without a master's degree need a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.67/4.33 in third-year and subsequent philosophy courses, and that an honours degree is preferred when no MA is held; where prior undergraduate work is judged insufficient, the department may require additional undergraduate philosophy courses to be completed before admission as a qualifying student. Beyond that programme-specific threshold, applicants must otherwise satisfy Simon Fraser University's general graduate admission requirements under Graduate General Regulation 1.3. The department states it pays close attention to both letters of reference and writing samples when assessing applications. Neither the programme page nor the department's own material sets a Philosophy-specific English-language score; applicants must instead meet SFU's graduate English-language proficiency requirement, which is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each band, or an equivalent score on TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, CAEL or Duolingo.
