The Master of Science in Computing Science with a specialization in Statistical Machine Learning at the University of Alberta is a thesis-based graduate degree offered by the Department of Computing Science. It is one of three MSc options in the department, alongside a standard MSc in Computing Science available as both thesis-based and course-based, and an MSc in Computing Science with a specialization in Multimedia offered as course-based only; the Statistical Machine Learning specialization is offered exclusively as a thesis-based program. The department also offers a corresponding PhD in Computing Science with a specialization in Statistical Machine Learning. Departmental research spans human-computer interaction, algorithmics, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, communication networks, computer games, computer graphics, computer vision, multimedia communications, database systems, machine learning, reinforcement learning, robotics, software engineering, and software systems, with this specialization concentrating on statistical and machine learning methods within that broader base. The program is delivered on campus at the University of Alberta's Edmonton campus and suits students pursuing thesis-based research training in statistical machine learning ahead of further doctoral study or research careers.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a University of Alberta baccalaureate degree or an equivalent qualification from another recognized institution, with a minimum admission grade point average (AGPA) of 3.0 (a B average) on the 4-point scale, calculated on the last 60 units of course weight or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework. Admission to the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is competitive: meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee acceptance, and the final admission decision is made by the department together with the Faculty.
