Program details
Overview
This program leads to a Bachelor of Science with a major addressing statistics within the University of Calgary's Faculty of Science, delivered on campus. Coursework builds mathematical and statistical fundamentals before extending into subdisciplines such as probability, stochastic processes, biostatistics, and machine learning, alongside foundational areas including abstract algebra, analysis, and discrete structures. Early courses include introductory calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, introduction to statistical inquiry, and programming with data, taught through an active problem-solving approach in classes, tutorials, and assignments rather than lecture-only delivery. No co-operative work term, thesis, or practicum component is described. The program suits students who enjoy working with data, quantifying uncertainty, and applying statistical reasoning across disciplines. Career paths mentioned include quantitative finance, industrial mathematics, software development, data science and analytics, primary and secondary teaching, and public-policy statistics, as well as postgraduate research. The degree also functions as a pathway into graduate study in mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, or computer science, or into professional programs such as law, medicine, education, veterinary medicine, or architecture.
