Program details

Overview

This is a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry at the University of Calgary, a thesis-based doctoral program. Students complete between one and four courses depending on their academic background, along with two research seminars on the literature or current research, and sit oral and written candidacy examinations before advancing to thesis research, which is defended in an open oral examination. Research areas in the department include cleaner energy, health-related chemistry and chemistry for quantum and nano-scale applications, with coursework options spanning electrochemical fundamentals, organometallic, organic or inorganic chemistry and toxicology. Applicants are expected to hold a thesis-based MSc or a four-year honours chemistry degree with a strong academic record. As a doctoral program, the focus is on independent, supervised laboratory or computational research rather than coursework alone. It suits students seeking advanced research training for careers as research scientists, medical researchers or industrial process chemists, or for academic positions in chemistry.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.30 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Admission normally requires a thesis-based MSc, though a four-year honours bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.70 GPA will also be considered; the general minimum is a GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. No specific prerequisite courses are mandated, and a supervisor must be listed at the time of application. The programme defers English-language proficiency to the Faculty of Science English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements in the Academic Calendar, which mirror the Faculty of Graduate Studies general standard: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 86 with no section below 20, or Duolingo English Test 125 with no sub-score below 105. Applicants must supply two academic references from a professional or institutional email address; no writing sample, interview or standardized admission test is required.

Application Details

Start Date: September, January, and May
Application Deadline: For Fall 2027 entry, the University of Calgary opens undergraduate applications for domestic applicants on 1 October 2026 and for international applicants on 15 August 2026, both closing on the same firm application deadline of 1 March 2027, with supporting documents due by 15 March 2027 and offers accepted by 1 May 2027. International applicants follow the identical March 1 deadline; the university publishes no separate, later international closing date. Applications are not accepted on a rolling basis after the deadline for most direct-entry programmes, though a small number of programmes (e.g. Nursing) run further selection rounds into the summer while space remains. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
