The Master of Arts (MA) in Archaeology is a thesis-based graduate program emphasizing hands-on field and laboratory investigation. Students benefit from the department's field and lab research across Western Canada, the circumpolar North, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Research areas include cultural heritage management, the development of social complexity, ethnoarchaeology, human-environment interaction, landscape archaeology, paleobotany, bioarchaeology and social identity. Students complete four courses and a season of fieldwork, then submit and defend an original research thesis. The program takes two years to complete full-time, with a four-year maximum completion limit, and admits students for a September 1 start. Admission requires a four-year baccalaureate degree, a minimum 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale over the past two years of full-time study, written work samples, a statement of research interests, a current CV and two reference letters.

Applicants whose primary language is not English must also meet the university's language proficiency requirements.
