Overview
The course-based Master of Arts in Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Calgary offers three streams: applied linguistics, literature and film studies, and transcultural studies. The applied linguistics stream covers language acquisition, learning and teaching, and sociolinguistics in French, Chinese, German, and Spanish; the literature and film stream focuses on French, German, and Spanish; and the transcultural studies stream, described by the department as the only one of its kind in Canada, examines cultures across French-, Arabic-, Chinese-, German-, Italian-, Japanese-, Russian-, and Spanish-speaking regions. The program is not intended for students researching English-language texts or English as a Second Language. Students complete ten courses over three years full-time (four years maximum), finishing with a roughly 20-page written essay forming the basis of a Capstone Examination; no thesis supervisor is required. Specializations are available in French and Spanish. Graduates pursue careers in post-secondary education, cultural organizations, government services, publishing, and translation and interpretation.

Admission Requirements: Applicants need a four-year baccalaureate degree or equivalent with adequate academic background in modern languages, linguistics, literary, film, or cultural studies, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 point system over the last two years of full-time study (at least 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units). Required materials include an academic writing sample of approximately 8-15 pages, a statement of research interest of at least 250 words, and two reference letters. Applicants need a recommended minimum language proficiency of CEFR level B2 or ACTFL Intermediate-High in the target language, and non-native English speakers must meet the English language proficiency criteria in the Academic Calendar. The application deadline is January 15 for September 1 admission.
