Molecular Genetics and Microbiology is offered by the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Arts & Science, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science. The program covers the molecular dimensions of genetics and microbiology, including gene cloning and regulation, genome sequencing and analysis, gene-editing tools such as CRISPR, diagnosis of viral and bacterial infectious disease, and microbe-host interactions. It is available as a Major, offering broad, flexible training across both disciplines, or as a Specialist with Genetics or Microbiology streams, providing research-intensive, in-depth training including advanced laboratory experience and critical analysis of scientific literature; Specialist enrolment begins in second year. Students apply to the Faculty of Arts & Science through the Life Sciences admission category before choosing their specific program of study. The curriculum prepares graduates for further study or research and laboratory careers in genetics, microbiology, and related biomedical fields.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U/M-level subjects, including English, and must present English (ENG4U or EAE4U), Biology (SBI4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), and Chemistry (SCH4U), with Physics (SPH4U) recommended. The co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not counted toward admission. Admission is through the Life Sciences category at the Faculty of Arts & Science; entry to the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Specialist or Major program of study itself is selected in second year.
