Overview
York University is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, established in 1959.
It is Canada's third-largest university by enrolment and operates across three Toronto-area campuses: the main Keele campus in north-west Toronto, the bilingual Glendon campus in midtown, and the Markham campus that opened in York Region, alongside an EcoCampus field station in Costa Rica. Teaching and research are organised through eleven Faculties and professional schools, including the Schulich School of Business, Osgoode Hall Law School, the Lassonde School of Engineering, the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change, Glendon College and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
The university reports more than 53,500 students enrolled in over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and an alumni network of roughly 390,000 graduates drawn from more than 172 countries. York places a strong emphasis on experiential education: it states that about 70 per cent of its programs offer a co-op option, and co-op or internship placements are built into most Lassonde and Schulich degrees.
Glendon College delivers a bilingual English-French liberal arts curriculum, making York one of the few Ontario universities with a dedicated bilingual campus.
The Keele campus is an urban site served by two subway stations on the Toronto transit network. A new medical school is scheduled to open in 2028.
