Program details

Overview

The EdD in Child Study and Education is a cohort-based doctoral program offered by the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study (Jackman ICS), University of Toronto. It is designed for professionals working in education or related fields who want to enrich their practice and advance their careers as scholar-practitioners. The program emphasizes innovation and advanced professional practice, and how child study research informs decision-making across learning environments. Instead of a traditional dissertation, students complete a Dissertation in Practice focused on identifying research-informed solutions to practical problems. Students choose one of three emphasis areas: Early Years and Early Learning, Special Education, or Mental Health and Wellbeing. Jackman ICS faculty, who teach most of the program's courses, also supervise the majority of EdD research, and the institute includes an award-winning nursery-through-Grade-6 laboratory school located near OISE.
