Program details
Overview
The PhD in Chemistry (Quantum Information) at the University of Waterloo is a thesis-based doctoral program offered by the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science, run in partnership with the Institute for Quantum Computing. Students combine chemistry research with a broad foundation in quantum information science, taking advanced courses on the foundations, applications and implementation of quantum information processing alongside original research under faculty supervision toward a doctoral thesis. The program runs full-time over a nominal 48 months, is delivered on-campus, and admits students each September, January and May. Most applicants enter with a completed Master of Science degree, though direct admission from an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree is available to outstanding candidates. Applicants whose prior education was not in English must demonstrate English proficiency through an accepted test. Graduates are prepared for interdisciplinary research careers at the interface of chemistry and quantum technology.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission normally requires a completed Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in Science with a minimum overall standing of 75% in the last two years of study (domestic applicants); direct entry from a Bachelor of Science degree is possible for outstanding applicants who graduated with an overall standing of 89%. Applicants must submit official transcripts, three academic references, and responses to program-specific application questions. Applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must demonstrate proficiency through an accepted test such as TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic.
