Program details

Overview

The certificate builds skills and knowledge for the food service industry, gained through practical work experience in community-based placements, and is intended for adults with cognitive disabilities. Study opens with orientation to basic job readiness, industry safety including FOODSAFE certification, kitchen awareness and knife use, before progressing from kitchen fundamentals into food preparation and cooking skills. Classroom and kitchen learning then alternates with three supervised workplace placements of four weeks each, increasing in variety and complexity as the programme continues.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This certificate is designed for students with a diagnosed or documented history of a learning difficulty, and admission runs through an instructor interview rather than academic transcripts: the interview includes a hands-on kitchen assessment and a 15-minute reading assessment to gauge functional reading level. No school grades, prior credential or standardized English test score are required. Because the programme includes a work-experience placement, applicants must pass a Criminal Record Check beforehand, and those whose results show a risk to vulnerable populations cannot complete the programme. VCC's general conditions still apply — Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, age 16 or older or secondary-school graduation, and submission of any requested documents — with seats offered in the order applications are completed, and applicants should be able to work under pressure and on irregular shifts.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply through EducationPlannerBC. VCC publishes each programme's own application window, term by term, on its When to Apply page rather than one college-wide date: windows open roughly six to twenty months before the term starts and close on a stated date, though popular programmes can close earlier once seats fill, since places generally go to eligible applicants in the order their application is completed. International applicants use the International Applicant option on EducationPlannerBC; VCC opens international applications on 1 February of the previous year for Winter entry, 1 June for Spring/Summer, and 1 October for Fall, with no fixed closing date — applications continue until roughly three to four months before the term begins or until it fills, so admission is effectively rolling for international applicants. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
