Overview
The Master of Science in Mathematics equips candidates with advanced mathematical knowledge and the foundation for independent original research, pushing students to carry out research work on problems that are local, regional or worldwide in scope and preparing graduates for careers in education or industry. Year 1 includes research methods and electives such as advanced abstract algebra, ordinary differential equations, operations research, topology, scientific computing and lattice theory, while Year 2 centres on a major research project with options including statistical learning with R.
The two-year, 240-credit-point degree is taught at the Lautoka and Samabula campuses. The standard route requires a BSc in Mathematics with a GPA of at least 3 out of 5 (grade B or above); candidates who fall short may still qualify with two-plus years spent in relevant teaching, research or industry work, and holders of a Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics with the same GPA can enter a shorter one-year MSc track.
