The environmental engineering degree gives broad knowledge of the field, covering what causes environmental problems and their consequences, how they can be prevented, ranging from local oil spills to global issues such as climate change and microplastics in water, and building the ability to plan activities efficiently with resources and materials while factoring in the circular economy. Teaching is practice-focused, combining laboratory work with theory and mostly online coursework; only the second year has to be spent in Mikkeli, Finland, with a strongly practical orientation involving sampling and analysis on real cases using modern equipment, after which the remaining studies can continue online. Exchange studies can be added for a more international degree, while practical training and the thesis can instead be completed in the student's home country or city. Career routes lead into environmental research, supervision, planning and management, including recycling solutions for cities or remediation work in contaminated sites, with job titles ranging across project engineer, environmental supervisor, quality manager, environmental advisor, consultant, environmental planning officer, development engineer and environmental manager.
