Degrees

In Finland, universities are only allowed to confer degrees that have been stipulated by the government and the Ministry of Education and Culture. This is known as the regulation of educational responsibilities. The regulations specify the level and field of degrees each university can confer. It is important to note that there are fewer fields of degrees than there are fields to study. For example, after studying computer science, one earns a degree in the field of engineering or sciences.

Socially Sustainable Societies, Bachelor and Master of Social Sciences (3 + 2 yrs) koulutus_733203 Natural Sciences
Contemporary societies face wicked problems more and more frequently. Innovative service solutions are needed to overcome the financial burden of an aging society. Cross-disciplinary thinking is necessary when tackling social issues related to climate change.   In the Bachelor's Programme in Socially Sustainable Societies, the ideas and building blocks for wellbeing and health — from the past and present — are examined for designing sustainable societies of the future. We define social sustainability as the social dimension of sustainability and how societies function with an emphasis on resilience, equality, and inclusion. The programme introduces the Nordic perspectives on social sustainability, the welfare state, and intersectoral action, as well as addresses the broader historical, global and socio-political determinants of health and wellbeing. A unique combination of social and health sciencesIn this programme you will tackle topical questions related to socially sustainable societies:How to ensure that sustainability is achieved through socially sustainable policies? What is the role of welfare states for sustainability? What does social sustainability imply to social and health protection and security? How to promote universal access to health and social protection as part of public policies? How to address different types of social inequalities such as those related to economic status, gender and ethnicity? What are the social determinants of health in national and global contexts?Studies are structured around topical researchThe wide provision of courses and teaching is built upon the topical research conducted by the faculty. You can also choose free-choice studies from other degree programmes and thus enjoy added opportunities to learn about crossover themes from several study programmes. The programme prepares students to continue their studies in master’s programmes. All accepted students are automatically given the right to continue their studies in the Master’s Programme in Social Science Research which includes specialisations such as Public Policy Analysis or Comparative Social Policy and Welfare.  Tampere University also offers several other relevant English language master’s programmes such as the Public and Global Health programme (admission every second year) as well as multidisciplinary programmes such as Sustainable Digital Life.  Become a professional in designing and building socially sustainable societies of the futureThe programme teaches historical roots and importance of social policy and public health also from the global angle, and acknowledges the increasingly important role of the environment as a condition of social sustainability.   Our students will develop competencies to critically assess and compare different modes of welfare services, and social and health policy options. Moreover, they will gain an understanding of the means to reduce social and health inequality, learn methods for assessing social and health impacts, and intersectoral action.  Graduates will have a solid knowledge base and the necessary theoretical and methodological skills needed to become professionals in designing and building socially sustainable societies.

If you want to work on e.g. portable devices, wearables, biosensors, or microfluidic chips, this is a good specialization for you. In this specialization, you will learn practical skills in cleanroom microfabrication, characterization of microsensors and actuators, microscopy, and theoretical background to understand physics at the microscale.Miniaturisation has been one of the important technological megatrends in the past decades. Miniaturisation is a key approach to make devices and processes sustainable: by making devices and components smaller, we can make more measurements by using smaller amounts of reagents and samples, more computations with less energy, obtain more data in a shorter time, and make more devices from the same amount of raw materials.Within Finland, this specialization is unique in its interdisciplinarity: you learn the fundamentals of microsystems technology but also its biomedical applications in one whole. This gives you a strong background for designing micro- and nanodevices, but also to understand how these devices can be used in biomedical applications to the benefit of the patient or the user.Career opportunitiesAfter you graduate with this specialization, your future job might be to develop a wearable sensor device for monitoring physiological signals, targeting either patient monitoring or wellness tracking applications. Or you might continue career in academia, researching organ-on-a-chip type of devices. Organ-on-a-chip devices are microfluidic cell culture chips, mimicking the activities of entire organs and thus providing a novel approach for developing new medicines, understanding disease mechanisms, and studying toxicological effects of chemical compounds in vitro. The job market prospects for microtechnologies in Europe remains strong. Recently, EU has launched the European Chips Act, which aims to invest €43 billion in the field, meaning there will be many job openings in related fields within the near future.CollaborationWe foster close collaboration between engineering professionals, life scientists and clinicians, and therefore provide optimal exposure for the students taking part in the degree programme. Make big sense of big dataHow do self-driving cars navigate city streets? How do streaming platforms predict what you’ll enjoy watching next? How can health data reveal life-saving insights, or social media data show what topics matter to millions of people? The answer is data science.Data science combines computer science, mathematics, and statistics with modern methods like machine learning, AI, and data engineering. It gives us the tools to turn massive, messy datasets into knowledge, predictions, and practical solutions. From robots and medicine to culture, society, and the economy, it is data science that helps us understand complex systems and shape the future.Experts in large-scale data analysis are urgently needed to tackle today’s complex quantitative challenges. These include automated understanding of text documents, conversations, and social media content; building intelligent search engines; uncovering data-driven insights into society, the economy, and global culture; developing medical and biological applications; and enabling autonomous systems such as self-driving cars and robots.Tampere University offers three related specialisations that involve the analysis, modelling, prediction, and computation with big data: the Data Science (MSc) specialisation and the Statistical Data Analytics (MSc) specialisation, which focus on computational and statistical algorithms for data mining and machine learning, and the Signal Processing and Machine Learning (MSc Tech) specialisation, which focuses on engineering accurate predictive machine learning models. The Data Science (MSc) specialisation features similar topic areas as the Statistical Data Analytics specialisation, with the Data Science (MSc) specialisation placing more emphasis on algorithmic and computational aspects of data science and artificial intelligence. The Data Science (MSc) specialisation focuses on the algorithmic and computational foundations of data analysis, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. You will study methods ranging from probabilistic modelling and efficient data mining algorithms to advanced deep learning with neural networks and network analysis. In addition to mastering these techniques, you will also learn to interpret results critically and present them effectively to decision-makers through clear summaries and visualisations.Data Science is one of the specialisations in the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering.

International Doctoral Programme in Epidemiology and Public Health (4 yrs) koulutus_875605 Public Health
The main objectives of the IPPE Programme are to increase knowledge and understanding of major public health problems, particularly in low-and middle-income countries, and to build sustainable public health capacity in these countries by collaborating with global partners in the field. The Programme trains epidemiologists and public health personnel for leadership positions in research, administration, program planning and policy development. The selected PhD candidates will spend the 2025 to 2026 academic year (from August 2025 to May 2026) in Tampere, Finland to complete the required coursework and to prepare a comprehensive research plan for their PhD thesis. The bulk of field research, data analysis and reporting, however, is generally conducted after completion of coursework either in Finland or abroad during three to four additional years. The doctoral dissertation consists of at least three original scientific papers published in international, peer-reviewed journals and a thesis synthesizing the research findings. After successful public examination and defense of the dissertation, a doctoral degree (PhD) in epidemiology or related public health discipline is awarded.
