Program details
Overview
This Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences gives librarians and information professionals specialised, research-informed training that integrates traditional and digital theory and practice. The first year is built around a common, compulsory course covering the main theories and practices in the field, after which you choose a specialist stream to follow for the remainder of the degree.
It is studied part-time in the evening over 6 semesters and carries 90 ECTS credits at Master's level (MQF Level 7), combining taught study with a research element.
Graduates bring diversified theoretical and practical knowledge to public and private institutions, in Malta and internationally, and the degree also provides a route into further study at doctoral level. This specialised knowledge is valued by employers across the library and information sector.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UM applies course-specific entry requirements under its regulations and bye-laws. Local applicants are assessed on qualifications such as the Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate, or European Baccalaureate; international applicants hold overseas qualifications evaluated individually for comparability with UM's standards, with no extra requirements beyond the course's own criteria. MATSEC-qualification applicants must apply as soon as they receive their first result slip after the May/June session; students sitting September resits should apply by the course's first deadline rather than waiting on resit results. After evaluation, the Office of the Registrar issues a decision letter. Admission may also be granted via Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.
