Overview
This master's degree is one of five streams offered under the University's Biomedical Sciences programme, with Microbiology as the named specialisation here. It is intended for graduates in medicine, medical laboratory science or another area the Board of Studies judges relevant, and builds advanced knowledge and training within microbiology through a mainly taught course of study.
Delivered part-time by day over six semesters for a total of 90 ECTS credits, the programme is structured to lead on to further study at doctorate level, with many past graduates continuing locally or internationally. Graduates have gone on to further academic or clinical research roles, including positions within university-based and other funded research settings. Within Malta's qualifications framework, the qualification is pitched at MQF Level 7, the Master's level.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UM applies course-specific entry requirements under its regulations and bye-laws. Local applicants are assessed on qualifications such as the Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate, or European Baccalaureate; international applicants hold overseas qualifications evaluated individually for comparability with UM's standards, with no extra requirements beyond the course's own criteria. MATSEC-qualification applicants must apply as soon as they receive their first result slip after the May/June session; students sitting September resits should apply by the course's first deadline rather than waiting on resit results. After evaluation, the Office of the Registrar issues a decision letter. Admission may also be granted via Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.
