Program details
Overview
This master's programme continues directly from the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Midwifery, deepening students' clinical and academic grounding in the profession. The first two semesters are built from compulsory study-units, with an elective unit allowing students to pursue a particular interest, and the final semester centred on an independent research-based dissertation.
Delivered full-time over three semesters for a total of 90 ECTS credits, the course is intended to strengthen graduates' standing as autonomous practitioners. It supports progression into roles such as midwifery manager, clinical educator, policy maker or researcher, and lays the groundwork for students who wish to continue on to doctoral study in the field. Within Malta's qualifications framework, the qualification is pitched at MQF Level 7, the Master's level.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UM applies course-specific entry requirements under its regulations and bye-laws. Local applicants are assessed on qualifications such as the Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate, or European Baccalaureate; international applicants hold overseas qualifications evaluated individually for comparability with UM's standards, with no extra requirements beyond the course's own criteria. MATSEC-qualification applicants must apply as soon as they receive their first result slip after the May/June session; students sitting September resits should apply by the course's first deadline rather than waiting on resit results. After evaluation, the Office of the Registrar issues a decision letter. Admission may also be granted via Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.
