Research at MPhil level widens human understanding, opens up unexplored areas and adds to progress in science, technology and society. Researchers can cooperate with colleagues in other countries and have the abilities needed to look into practical problems and propose workable answers.
Offered through the Doctoral School, this research degree asks students to demonstrate advanced skill in research methods and deep knowledge of their subject. They learn to deal with obstacles by investigating systematically, and they improve their academic writing so that results can be shared in articles, reports and talks.
Year one covers research design and philosophy, qualitative and quantitative methods, a proposal and a first progress report. Year two includes seminars, workshops and symposiums, a publication and the thesis. Graduates may become academics, research analysts, officers or coordinators, or writers and editors.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: A bachelor's degree with honours at Second Class First Division level or equivalent approved by the School Board. In exceptional cases the Doctoral School may consider a Second Class Second Division degree with either a master's degree or relevant work experience.
