This programme covers art in its various forms, including visual arts, literature, music, theatre, film, architecture, digital media and popular culture, beginning with a grounding in long-running developments across the history of Western art before turning to focus on art scenes across Europe and the Americas over roughly the last hundred years. The approach is interdisciplinary, comparative and multi-medial, training students to analyse art forms individually and in relation to each other, and to apply social, political, historical and theoretical perspectives that draw on both European and American views of culture. Students learn to tell art forms apart and to distinguish contemporary from historical judgements of art's worth, and are encouraged to develop their own grounded view on art and popular culture.
