Leiden's African Studies master's pairs established scholarship with practice-based learning, and takes a genuinely multidisciplinary approach to studying Africa from political, economic, geographical, cultural, linguistic, literary, anthropological, and historical angles. Six cross-cutting themes organise the curriculum: world-viewing, caring, dwelling and moving, decolonising, developing, and framing Africa itself, giving students a coherent structure for connecting very different disciplinary perspectives. Students learn to critically analyse current events as they unfold, using a broad, comparative, and global lens, and are introduced to multi-modal and mixed research methods suited to studying a continent as varied as Africa. A central part of the programme is an embedded research project, roughly ten weeks long, carried out at a professional organisation in Africa such as a research institute, think tank, government agency, or non-governmental organisation, giving students direct, practical exposure to the kind of work the degree prepares them for.
