Overview

This two-year research master's examines how tangible and intangible remnants of the past are dealt with and how history is constructed in the present, training students to think critically about how past societies engaged with their own history as well as the differing and sometimes conflicting ways the past is interpreted and used today. Students specialise in either Heritage and Memory Studies or Archaeology, building a theoretical foundation across Archaeology, Memory Studies and Heritage Studies, and how these fields intersect. It is offered jointly by the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam through ACASA, drawing on the expertise of both institutions and a wide range of courses, interest areas and specialisations.
