Overview
The programme engages with current debates on global development, examining how social, economic, political, environmental and gendered dimensions of societal change interact from local to global scales. Central themes include inequality and poverty, climate and environmental change, global governance, armed conflict, gender, food systems, rural development, decolonisation and related struggles for justice, drawn from research across a wide range of geographical contexts and attentive to how localities and countries interlink within a world of multiple competing powers. Teaching emphasises active learning through field courses, internships and student collaboration, combined with interdisciplinary research methods intended to build empirical insight, analytical tools and practical skills for evaluating and formulating development policy and strategy, with sensitivity to the differing cultures, ecologies, institutions and economies of different societies. Exchanges with other universities may form part of the two-year, full-time, English-language degree, which carries accreditation from EADI, the European body for development research and training.
