Overview
The programme builds the competence needed to engage with sustainability issues at both global and local scale, approached from a human-geography perspective, emphasising the relations between human behaviour, nature and society, with advanced coverage of topics such as urban and rural governance and planning, the green restructuring of industry across both urban and rural settings, climate change adaptation and mitigation, environmental degradation and natural hazards, global development, conflict and migration, and natural resource management, land use and environmental governance. Teaching combines field courses and fieldwork, laboratory and practical exercises, seminar groups and lectures, building skills in academic writing, analysis and critical thinking. Fieldwork, typically lasting four to eight weeks, takes place either in Norway or overseas, scheduled for the close of the first year, feeding into data collection and analysis for a 60-ECTS thesis completed in the second year. Typical career paths include urban and local planning, regional development, environmental management in the public and private sectors, work with NGOs, consulting, research, or roles in education.
