The Media Studies Master's at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies sets out to re-examine media's role in the Arab region, training researchers to study Arab media production, institutions, and audiences empirically. The structure runs 12 core credit hours, a 3-credit interdisciplinary course, 3 credits of free electives, 15 credits of program electives, and a 9-credit dissertation, with courses on research methodology, media theory, representation, audiences, political economy, and media law and ethics.
Candidates are expected to leave able to analyze Arab and wider Middle Eastern media scholarship critically, question Western-centered framings of media studies, and apply media-studies theory to original empirical work. The program's own learning outcomes point to developing and presenting independent research built on acquired methods and data-gathering skills rather than purely descriptive media commentary.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry needs an undergraduate degree, earned through full-time study, or its recognized equivalent, ideally within the past five years, at the minimum grade specified in the program's table. Those entering their last undergraduate year can apply, provided degree conferral falls by July 1 of that year. Candidates need working English alongside Arabic research fluency; non-Arabic-background applicants sit a spoken-and-written Arabic check before enrollment, and each candidate may submit only one application.
