The Certificate in Energy Studies looks at how engineering, business, and geopolitics come together across the energy sector, covering both the technical fundamentals and the political and security questions that surround oil, gas, and renewables. The curriculum pulls in courses from Georgetown's own faculty as well as Carnegie Mellon Qatar and Texas A&M Qatar/HBKU, reflecting the cross-institutional nature of energy work in the region.
Students take six courses in total, five from GU-Q and one from a partner institution, and finish with a senior capstone ePortfolio or thesis built around a specific theme in the field. Only two of the six courses may double-count toward a student's primary major, keeping the certificate a genuine addition to their degree.
Applicants apply online by the posted deadline, and the review committee weighs both academic record and a required essay on the applicant's interest in energy before admitting students in their second or third year.
