Qatar University's Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, delivered by the Biomedical Sciences Department at the College of Health Sciences, was the first program outside the United States to earn NAACLS accreditation, in April 2008. The four-year degree is built to produce competent medical laboratory technologists, with academic policies designed around the competencies graduates need to pass professional certification exams such as the ASCP exam and find employment afterward.
The curriculum follows a 2+2 structure: the first two years cover 33 credit hours of core courses plus required major-support coursework, and the following two years focus on the biomedical sciences major itself, closing with a final 20-week semester of five clinical practice courses in which students rotate through hospital laboratory sections affiliated with Hamad Medical Corporation. Earning the BSc does not depend on passing any external certification exam, though the college notes that doing so adds value for graduates and supports program accreditation.
