Boston University's undergraduate sociology major gives students a grounding in how societies function and change. Majors learn to judge research critically, looking at the assumptions behind a study, the methods chosen and how well the evidence supports its conclusions.
Coursework covers both theory and method and lets students explore specialties such as health, gender, culture, cities, crime, race, migration, and economic or political life. Courses are taken within the College of Arts & Sciences, and grades of C or higher are needed in each course counted toward the major.
The degree also builds written, oral and graphic communication skills. Graduates move into careers in medicine, law, social work, education and market research, among other areas.
