The doctoral program gives a broad background in anthropology, centered mainly on three strands: sociocultural, biological and archaeological anthropology. Graduates are prepared for work in universities, consulting and other applied roles.
Sociocultural research and teaching cover religion, law, politics, ethnicity, gender, history, social change, economic development, environmental topics, how culture shapes thought, and medical and psychological anthropology. Students are expected to present ideas to professional audiences in oral, written and graphic forms and to behave ethically and professionally in research and teaching.
Entering students complete at least sixteen graduate term courses, sixty-four units. Everyone takes a cross-subdiscipline course, two theory courses and a methods course, plus track-specific requirements in sociocultural anthropology, biological anthropology or archaeology. Remaining courses are chosen with the advisor.
